Four hotels in Canada, described by the same pair as everything else on this site: what opens the building to its surroundings, and what closes it. The first of them occupies pavilions built for a world exposition. The gaming floor is not described here and not judged here; what we look at is the plan, the depth and the edges of the building.

Montreal Casino & Hotel

A hotel and casino inside Expo 67 pavilions on an island in the St Lawrence River

How it opens

The site is an island, and the approach crosses water, so the building is surrounded by park, river and the remains of a world exposition. The former French pavilion keeps its glazed upper levels, and the higher floors look back at the city skyline and the river channel from a distance nothing else in Montréal offers.

How it shuts

Inside, the pavilions are stacked and deep, with several interior levels wrapped around a central void and few openings at the working heart of the plan. Restaurants and the show room sit within that depth. The island position also removes the ordinary street: there is no pavement frontage, only a bridge and a car park.

What that makes it

The building is therefore open at a distance and closed at close range. You see it across water long before you reach it, and once inside you are in a stacked interior that was designed for an exposition crowd.

The practical bitIt is reached by bridge from the city and parking fills on event nights, so check transport both ways before you go.

Fallsview Casino Resort

A resort set on the escarpment above Niagara Falls, with its glazed side aimed at the water

How it opens

Above the gorge, the building stands on high ground, and the elevation that faces the falls is glazed across several levels. Restaurants and upper rooms use that side, so the water is present as a permanent element of the interior. A pedestrian route connects the resort down the slope toward the falls themselves.

How it shuts

Away from the gorge the resort is a deep block built into the escarpment, entered through parking structures rather than a street door. The interior levels are broad and largely windowless, with the theatre, the spa and the service floors held inside that depth where daylight was never part of the plan.

What that makes it

One elevation does all the opening and the rest of the volume is mass. That is a direct consequence of the site: the resort has a single spectacular direction and a great deal of building to put behind it.

The practical bitThe area is on a steep slope and the walk down to the falls is easier than the walk back up, so plan the return.

River Rock Casino Resort

A waterfront resort near Vancouver with its own marina, a show theatre and restaurants along the river

How it opens

Boats arrive at the property directly, because the resort sits on the arm of the Fraser River and keeps its own marina. Terraces and dining rooms face the water, and a public path runs along the shore past the site. A rapid transit line and the airport are both close, which makes the approach unusually easy.

How it shuts

The main volume is a wide, low block with the theatre and the interior halls set well back from any exterior wall. Guests arrive from a large parking structure into internal circulation, and the parts of the plan facing the road are given to service and access rather than to rooms. Depth, not height, closes it.

What that makes it

So the water side and the road side are two different buildings joined together. One is a shoreline with boats and a walking route, the other is a deep interior reached from a car park.

The practical bitFlight paths and a transit line run close by, so ask which side of the building a quiet room is on.

Casino Rama Resort

A lakeside resort on the land of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, near Lake Couchiching

How it opens

Low buildings spread across open ground near Lake Couchiching, with woodland, water and a golf course around them rather than a town. Entrances, terraces and the hotel wings face that landscape, and the horizontal scale of the buildings keeps most of the accommodation within sight of trees and sky.

How it shuts

The entertainment and dining core is the deep part of the plan, held behind the accommodation and lit from within. The concert hall in particular is a sealed volume by function, since a room built for sound cannot carry windows. Around it the resort turns inward, and the site edge is defined by parking rather than a street.

What that makes it

The resort keeps two conditions side by side: a horizontal, rural edge that stays open to the lake country, and a sealed core built for events. Most of the plan is one or the other, with little between.

The practical bitIt stands well outside the nearest towns, so arrange the drive or a coach and check the return time in advance.
